Artist’s book launch, Friday 16 January 2015
Signed and numbered edition of one hundred and fifty by Victoria Browne. With the kind permission of the Freud Museum Vienna and Freud Museum London.
Prior to the family’s evacuation in 1938, ‘Ich kann die Gestapo jedermann auf das beste empfehlen’* refers to the few words that Sigmund Freud added after his signature in order to be granted his exit visa. Fifty years later this report was later proved incorrect and Victoria Browne’s highly executed artist’s book chronologically cites publications that continue to perpetuate this myth to the present day.
The citations are mirrored by tipped-in photographs of the unoccupied spaces that form Freud’s home in Vienna and obscure his relocated personal artefacts in London.
Victoria Browne draws on public special collections to appropriate material research. ‘I can highly recommend the Gestapo to everyone’* expands on Browne’s contribution to Sigmund Freud and the Play on the Burden of Representation, an international group exhibition curated by Mario Codgnato, Joseph Kosuth and Luisa Ziaja at 21er Haus in Vienna.
She is the founder of KALEID editions, a platform for European based artists’ books and her bookworks are held in collections globally.
The book is purchasable on our online shop.
